What is Backyard gardens?
This program supports low income households with the resources to grow fresh food in their backyards.
We will install the garden for free in your yard. You’ll also receive seeds and starts, compost, tools, educational workshops, resources and support from us throughout the year. We match up beginning gardeners with more experienced gardeners to provide one-on-one mentoring.
Participants save money on groceries, achieve more food security, spend more time outside, grow fresh food, get more exercise and experience the therapeutic benefits of tending to plants.
They also meet new people and learn new skills.
Backyard Gardens reduces food miles, which decreases pollution and energy use for refrigeration. It keeps money within the community. It also increases the total available farmland and reduces dependence on food sources outside of Hawaii.
We are just getting started and don’t have the resources yet to install, but we will add you to the wait list.
